This is the 9th meeting between these two teams. Independence overall is 3-5-0, 1-2-0 at home, 1-3-0 on the road, and 1-0-0 at the UNI-Dome against South Tama County. The first meeting took place on October 13th, 1990, at the UNI-Dome where the Independence won 20-6.

Justin Putz is in his 5th season as head coach of the Independence Mustangs and 6th overall. Currently, his record at Independence is 14-18-0. His overall coaching record is 19-23-0 in six seasons with three playoff appearances. Nate Doran is the head coach of the South Tama County Trojans.
