This is the 10th meeting between these two teams. Independence overall is 4-5-0, 2-2-0 at home, 1-3-0 on the road, and 1-0 at neutral sites against South Tama County. The first meeting took place on October 13th, 1990, in the UNI-Dome where the Mustangs won 20-6.

Justin Putz is in his 6th season as head coach of the Independence Mustangs and 7th overall. Currently, his record at Independence is 20-21-0. His overall coaching record is 25-26-0 in seven seasons with three playoff appearances.
