Alex Farmer is a first-year head coach coming to Independence after coaching Junior High and High school Softball at Grinnell last season. Alex is a 2018 Graduate of Grinnell High school where he was a 6-sport athlete in his time
as a Tiger, as well as being involved in numerous clubs including Student Athlete Leadership Team and Teens Against Tobacco Use.  Currently, Alex is finishing up his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education at the University of Northern Iowa where he intends to become a Physical Education and Health Education teacher. Alex plans to student teach at Independence during his next Fall semester before starting in the master’s Program in Kinesiology at UNI next Spring.

While at UNI, Alex has been involved in Club Baseball for a year where he was voted club treasurer, he has held the position of President of the UNI Physical Education Majors Club for 2 years and is in his 3rd year as a Student
Assistant for UNI’s Softball team.

Alex started his coaching certification straight out of high school, but his experience with UNI Softball is what
ultimately led him to finishing and becoming a coach. During the 2021 Softball Season, Farmer led UNIs outfield development and was tasked with coaching first base on offense. That season he was present for a record-breaking season for UNI Softball as they earned an At-Large bit to the NCAA tournament, earned 2nd place in both MVC

Regular Season and MVC Tournament play as well as MVC Coaching Staff of the Year.
